State Trade Associations and Home Building Project Concerns

State Trade Associations Collaborate to Inform New Yorkers About Home Building Project Concerns

This just in from the Professional Insurance Agents of New York State and the New York State Builders Association

April 6, 2017, ALBANY, N.Y.In time for the spring building season, the New York State Builders Association and the Professional Insurance Agents of New York State have teamed up to inform the public about important details to help them achieve a successful remodeling or home building project. The two associations have developed consumer materials—offered through their respective memberships—that include information and details that can protect homeowners, their home projects and their assets.

“We want New Yorkers to know that there are several simple steps that they should follow to assure an outstanding experience when hiring a home improvement contractor,” said Eric Willson, President of NYSBA. “If you are thinking about starting a home-improvement project or hiring a contractor to repair damage to your home, it is important to know the safeguards that are in place in order to protect yourself from unscrupulous contractors.”

The fliers, which are available in single- or double-sided versions include details such as the types of insurance and paperwork necessary for home construction projects, as well as suggestions about working with professionals, gaining references and having permits and coverages in place prior to embarking on an expensive and dangerous project. The fliers also include information for consumers about who to contact if there are unresolved problems with projects.

“New York has unique rules in place that homeowners may not know about, but which could be expensive problems if even inadvertent omissions are made on a construction project,” said John C. Parsons II, CIC CPIA AAI, president of PIANY. “No professional builder or independent insurance agent wants his or her client to get caught unaware or unprotected.”

The fliers are available to PIANY and NYSBA members for distribution to their respective clients through their associations.

The New York State Builders Association is a not-for-profit trade association comprised of 15 local affiliates across the state. NYSBA represents 2,100 single and multi-family home builders, remodelers, developers, and associate member firms. These members perform over $5 billion in single and multi-family residential construction annually and employ over 200,000 New Yorkers.
