Larry Schiffer Named Dick Kennedy Award Recipient

MCLEAN, VA.—ARIAS•U.S. is proud to announce that Larry Schiffer, Partner, Squire Patton Boggs (US) LLP was named recipient of the newly named Dick Kennedy Award (previously the ARIAS-U.S. Award) for his service, hard work and commitment to ARIAS-U.S. Schiffer was recognized at the 2019 ARIAS-U.S. Fall Conference reception on October 3, 2019.

Chairman Emeritus Dick Kennedy passed away on February 14, 2019, in Naples, FL. Dick was founder and the first chair of the ARIAS-U.S. Board of Directors. He was a former Senior Partner of Werner & Kennedy & General Counsel to American Skandia, Inc. He was a preeminent member of the insurance bar throughout his 45-year career, serving as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Tort & Insurance Practice Section, Chair of the New York State Bar Association Insurance Section, President of the U.S. Chapter of the International Association of Insurance Law and member of the Federation of Insurance & Corporate Counsel and International Association of Insurance Counsel.  In his honor, the ARIAS-U.S. Board of Directors has chosen to rename the ARIAS-U.S. Award, the Dick Kennedy Award.

The award, at the discretion of the ARIAS-U.S. Board of Directors, is given to an individual who, through his or her own conduct and initiative, has epitomized the objectives of ARIAS-U.S. by making significant contributions towards the improvement of the arbitration process and by fostering the development of arbitration law and practice as a means of resolving national and international insurance and reinsurance disputes in an efficient, economical and equitable manner. The award dates to 2004 and was previously given to Dick Kennedy, Marc Gurevitz in 2011, Charlie Foss in 2012 and Bill Yankus in 2014.

“Larry has been nothing but helpful and kind and always willing and able to help out with any project,” said Sara Meier, M.S.Ed., CAE, Executive Director, ARIAS-U.S.

“This award is well deserved and speaks to Larry’s continuous commitment to the work of ARIAS-U.S. and the reinsurance/insurance industry. Larry gives generously of his time and Dick Kennedy would have been proud to see the award bestowed on Larry,” said Michael Frantz, ARIAS-U.S.’s Board Chairman.

Larry has chaired the ARIAS-U.S. Ethics and Technology Committees and is currently the Editor of the ARIAS-U.S. Quarterly.  He co-chaired the ARIAS-U.S. 2017 Spring Conference and has presented at the following conferences: Fall 2005, Fall 2007, Fall and Spring, 2009, Fall 2010, Fall & Spring, 2015, Fall & Spring 2017, Fall 2018 and Fall 2019.

Larry has been a partner at Squire Patton Boggs (formerly Patton Boggs) since 2012 and prior to that appointment was a partner at Dewey & LeBoeuf for 13 years. In 1982, Larry started as an associate at Werner & Kennedy and eventually became a partner. Prior to that, he was a law assistant with the Supreme Court of the State of New York, in the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department.
