New York State DMV Reminds Motorcycle Owners To Renew Registrations Before April 30 Deadline

New York, N.Y. April 26, 2016 –The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today reminded motorcycle owners and riders across the state to renew their motorcycle registration before they expire on April 30. Unlike most other motor vehicles, motorcycles are required to be registered for one year rather than two years in New York.

“Spring is the perfect time for motorcyclists to get out on the road and enjoy a great ride courtesy of the Empire State,” said DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan. “We do not want anyone missing out on the fun or getting a ticket just because they forgot to renew their registration with DMV. I encourage all riders to renew their registrations today, which has never been easier thanks to our online renewal process, and to stay safe as the motorcycle riding season gets into full swing.”

There are more than 736,500 licensed motorcyclists, 350,000 registered motorcycles, and 35,600 motorcycle permit holders in New York State. Motorcycle registrations can be renewed online, by mail or at a DMV office. Fees are displayed on the mailed renewal notice or on the computer screen when renewing online. In most cases, the fee to renew a motorcycle registration is $17.50. For riders registering their motorcycle for the first time, the DMV website features a registration fee calculator. Renewals completed online or by mail will be processed promptly and the permanent registration document will be mailed to the customer. New Yorkers renewing online are able to print a ten-day temporary registration document that can be used until their registration document arrives in the mail.

DMV also reminded motorists to watch for motorcycles as more bikes are on the roads, and encouraged motorcyclists to always ride with safety in mind. Completion of intensive safety courses, which are offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation under an agreement with DMV, enable motorcycle permit holders to waive the basic road test required by the DMV for licensure. With its vast open roads and great views around every corner, New York is a perfect destination for motorcycle enthusiasts. Throughout his administration, Governor Andrew Cuomo has highlighted the importance of tourism to New York, and motorcycle riders play an important role in the state’s tourism economy, especially during spring and summer. Last year, the Governor launched the “Ride the Catskills” tourism website, an online resource that features a series of itineraries and trips for visitors to enjoy the pristine beauty of the Catskills by motorcycle, car, and bike as well as through other outdoor adventures. The website connects scenic locations and outdoor recreation activities with dining, shopping, and lodging opportunities in the region.
