Auto insurance rates are now at the highest levels in 50 years, so the cost of repairs that may come from distracted driving is also up. Ahead of this year’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month (April), there is new research under embargo from telematics company Arity which has over 1 trillion miles of driving behavior data from 40M+ vehicle connections in its dataset.

Topline finding: 68% of 1,000 surveyed US drivers agree that distracted driving is extremely unsafe, but Arity’s dataset found a 30% increase in distracted driving per mile between 2019 and 2023 – up 7% in 2023 alone. Could this increase be driving car insurance rate hikes?

When asked what drivers see as their biggest road distractions:

A majority (Nine in 10 drivers) agree that driving under the influence, ignoring traffic signals, and distracted driving are unsafe behaviors – yet they happen daily.

Only four in 10 drivers see hard braking (38%) and speeding (42%) as extremely unsafe

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that speeding-related crashes make up almost all of traffic fatalities

24% of drivers see fast acceleration as a neutral behavior, and 11% see it as safe.

Evening commutes bring greater distractions – the highest levels of distracted driving in 2023 took place during weekday afternoons from 3 – 6:59 p.m. (AKA workday commutes home). [IA]
The post Distracted Driving Report: New Research first appeared on Insurance Advocate.

Tokio Marine Holdings Establishes New IR/SR Desk in NYC

Insurance Advocate

2024

April 2024

company news

Tokio Marine Holdings, Inc. The new Desk will further strengthen Tokio Marine Holdings’ relationships with institutional investors, shareholders and equity analysts in the United States, across the Americas, as well as in Europe.

Working in conjunction with Tokio Marine Holdings’ Executive Team and the IR/SR team in Tokyo, the Desk will strengthen communication and dialogue between the capital markets and Tokio Marine Group. The IR/SR Desk will be operational from April 1st, 2024.

The Desk is led by Taro Arakawa, who brings more than seven years of investor relations experience to the new role. He joined Tokio Marine Group in 2002. Since 2017, he has been responsible for investor and shareholder relations for Tokio Marine Holdings. In this role, he has worked closely with the top executive team of the Group to effectively communicate the growth story and future strategy with capital markets. Applied Underwriters has announced several transactions recently, which follow a long list in the preceding years.

According to Mr. Menzies, the stepped-up expansion and network growth of the Company has outpaced expectations: “We had set plans in 2023 for the engaging of new partners, for acquisitions and for the establishment of other alliance-styled deals, but we could not have anticipated the response from our initiatives in the marketplace. As it is getting more vigorous, we have hired Gregg Holtmeier to help blueprint and realize meaningful, strategic growth, using imagination and creativity together with the resources our professional team offers. It will prove a winning formula.”

Mr. Jamie Sahara, President of Applied Underwriters, observed that Mr. Holtmeier’s longtime association with the Company as an advisor and trusted consultant has enabled him to move into his new role confidently and expeditiously: “Gregg has added value to our growth model and will now participate as an integral part of our development planning and action agenda. His market knowledge and experience are assets that he brings to the process uniquely, spanning the expanded spectrum of our interests, notably in reinsurance. We welcome him enthusiastically.”

Mr. Holtmeier, who has been in the insurance and reinsurance fields since his graduation from Swarthmore College in 2000, has spent several years in senior executive management positions with direct responsibility for select, important business lines, focusing upon growth and strategy. He has served in strategic leadership roles at BMS, Guy Carpenter and JLT, while serving on multiple boards during his distinguished career. Mr. Holtmeier characterized his joining Applied Underwriters with great optimism:

“The industry itself, as well as longtime executives in the business, have begun to track Applied Underwriters’ progress with increasing interest, given its distinct entrepreneurial spirit, execution prowess and seemingly unparalleled ability to assemble leading talent in the industry. The Company is known for valuing a degree of autonomy not found elsewhere, giving strength and authority throughout its organization.
